RE: Anti-Theft Measures You’ve Taken with Your Toy Hauler

One of the first things I've done to the trailers I have had is to install a hidden switch for the electric jack or landing gear, it keeps people from playing with the button and might make a thief think twice when the trailer can't be raised or lowered. I also read about a guy who wired his 7-way plugs up different so the hot wire on another vehicle would cause the trailer brakes to set. I thought about doing this and making an adapter plug in case I need to pull with something else...........I'll probably never do it though.

RE: Battery Replacement

I read on one of these forums where a guy bought two more cheap box's (he couldn't find the deep ones) and cut the bottom out of them. then he placed them into the original boxes and that made them tall enough for the 6 volt batteries? plus they were double walled and he had extra lids!

RE: C rated tires - taken care of

I would say no way! I think D's would be pushing it. For towing I wouldn't settle for less than E's myself. I don't know about the Chevy but my Ram 2500 and 3500 srw both came with E's stock from the factory.

RE: TH forum the best!

I hear ya! I also bounce around the .net forums and the way some of the other mods act, pretty much makes me move on back to the TH Forum. Maybe that's their plan? I also hate when someone asks a question only to be told how well the search function works or that Google is you friend? I too think the Toyhauler Forum is by far the best at .net. It seem most of the clashes come from our topics popping up in the Active Topics window and the non hauler crowd chimes in from who knows where? PS. I still think we need a password

RE: What will my insurance do

WOW, sorry to hear about you Trailer, It would seem to me that if the trailer was slid sideways after the rear contacted the class A there would be enough force to bend the frame. I would push for the worst. otherwise the insurance company may try to fix it but end up paying replacement cost anyway after adding all the things they didn't see. you still get a reassembled trailer.

RE: Non-commercial Class A

Nope. Just for fun. That is why I think it is stupid to have to go through the entire book but I guess the State knows better.FWIW I dropped my Com. class A for a Non com. class A because I didn't need it for work anymore and I won't be pulling doubles anymore. I also decided to let it go because you are now held to a higher standard when you hold a Com. Class A even in your personal car and the DOT physicals got to be a pain.

RE: Maxxis (D) vs. Carlisle (E) vs. Marathon (C)

Wow, I think that's a first, Maxxis to Carlisle. some say they have had good luck with them? Personally I think I would go with Denmans if I were ever in the need for 15" Es again.

RE: Octane Boost Additive

My friends laugh because I always fill my fuel station with 91 octane. Around here it's usually only 20 cents more for the 91 so like r1MK says it's probably cheaper for me to buy the gas than the boost, around $8 extra for 40 gallons. Some of the gas will probably stay in the tank for the next trip so I believe it's better to start out with the better stuff and add some Sta-Bil to help keep it fresh. If it's going to be a while I'll burn it in the car. I don't know but I've been told :B that higher octane fuels runs cooler? The only time I ever used boost is in Baja when you couldn't buy gas suitable to run in a lawnmower. I would have to say it helped but I couldn't say for sure?

RE: Trailer Maint. Day Today

Hey map, do you feel the 6" eternabond was necessary? I was thinking of getting the 4" roll and doing the same to my 3405. Thanks I was going to use 4" but local roofing supply only had 6" in stock. Probably could use 4" but it would be a little more difficult to get a full 1" width positive seal on both sides of the metal trim to the cap or the roof sheet material. Especially on the ends of the seam where the roof wraps over to sidewall. Map GuyThanks

RE: Dealer offering a lower interest rate

I would play the same game and look for lower loan rate somewhere else. This proves is that he can get you a lower rate then he's giving you.

RE: Trailer Maint. Day Today

What seams do you all have on the roof. My roof appears to be one piece of rubber with only sealant used at fixtures and at edges. The front and rear edges are capped with a L-shaped metal piece with puddy tape underneath. Do you remove the gutters before placing sealant on the edges? 2008 Ragen FA3005 in our case - front and rear fiberglass caps with metal trim over the seam to the roof sheet material -TPO on our trailer not rubber. It has putty tape underneath and lap sealant on top. I covered this seam with 6" wide Eternabond Tape. Am in process of Eternabond taping the other roof penetrations like vents and skylights I did not Eternabond the the roof sheet to sidewall transition metal trim -just looked at the sealant closely for problems -then touched up with the 3M 4000UV sealant. Definitely did not remove gutters or side trim -just made sure that the sealant was intact and fully covering (protecting) putty tape along top side edge of trim/gutter. Putty tape will fail over time if exposed in my experience. Map GuyHey map, do you feel the 6" eternabond was necessary? I was thinking of getting the 4" roll and doing the same to my 3405. Thanks

RE: Tire Info

If I had kept my last trailer with 15" wheels I would have went with the Denmans. I have a friend that has Denmans and likes them. I emailed Denman a few weeks ago regarding this 65 mph max. rating on ST tires and their reply was quote "In regards to the speed rating - our tires are not speed rated. It is recommended to obey all posted speed limits when using our tires. It is also recommended to always maintain proper air pressures" I know most posted speed limits for trailers will keep you from legally exceeding 55-65 mph. I understand some states allow speeds above 65mph. while towing. So it sounds like Denman is ok with that?

RE: Those poor Bluehairs

As it has been said already ( they just don't get it). This is the toy hauler forum, what do these lurkers think it represents? For me (grey hair) it is a family life style that is all positive and healthy. Now I won't flame the lurkers because they are bored, tired of being parked on the slab, run out of things to say to each other and the weather has not changed. Please go to another forum like the "how to tow" section and make all the comments you want. Look fwd to hearing some tunes in the Mojave desert derwud!!Sometimes people just have to be heard. Most of the the misguided stumble into the TH Forum via the "Active Topics" link, I'm sure they feel some sort of shame or embarrassment once they realized where they've been. Oh, for the record I also have outdoor speakers backed up with an amp, I use it wisely but consider it a necessity.

RE: Those poor Bluehairs

I'm wondering where these people ever got the idea about campgrounds and paying for a campsite? I guess it's true, they really don't get it. Last year while out in the desert I had to get on my quad and ride an 1/8th mile to inform my camping neighbor that his music was unacceptable, we could hardly hear it, I offered him a beer and he apologized and turned it up for us...:B Nice guy!

RE: New law in California - text messaging while driving

The problem is most of the people that do these things will just keep on doing it and consider the fines a user fee for all the times they got away with it. Just like the people that park in no parking zones, drive in the carpool lanes alone, park in the handicap spots without a placard, etc. etc. etc. But now all the people that know better can say OH MY GOSH! That's against the law! The only new law I feel should be put on the books is one that says, For every new law passed, one old law must be tossed...or maybe two or three? IMO

RE: You'll never guess what I saw !!

Sometimes I wonder how some people end up buying an RV when they find out that they have to store their waste and the Poo Fairy doesn't come during the night and whisk it all away.

RE: Dodge Cummins Problem

Sounds like the lift pump went. It should be located on the back of the fuel filter canister, it looks kind of like a roll of quaters. when you turn the key on it should buzz for a few seconds. if you bump the starter (don't start it) it should buzz for about 20 seconds. in 2005 they moved the lift pump to the fuel tank which is what they will do to your friends truck as the old style pumps are no longer availabe. Mine went at about 50k miles. it's a common problem. the lift pump is covered under the Cummins engine warranty for 5 years/ 100k miles with NO deductible. Many dealers will try to get $100 from you under the 7/70 warranty. you may have to take the owners manual with you to prove it. If he is out of warranty I have heard that the retrofit kit (just the parts) is $300-$400 from Dodge?

Here's ours on the way home from buying it. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q248/4wheelerfun/sandpiper%20toy%20hauler/002.jpg Nice! That's the way to do it. No messing around! A campsite test run with the window sticker still attached..:C

RE: Something new I've learned about tires.

Sometimes tires can make all the difference. I had a single axle buggy trailer that we towed monthly for about 6 years, I always had light truck tires on it for the capacity, while out of town one blew out not sure why but I bought some bias ply st trailer tires with a higher load rating from Big O (I think Towmasters?). I could hardly get the trailer home, it was fine until I got in a curve and I almost lost it the first time. I limped it home and Big O took them back. I switched back to some lt tires and never had another problem. On topic, I run Toyo Open Country AT E rated tires, I bought them for the higher load capacity but I did notice a little less stability while towing compared to the BFG rugged trails I had on the truck before? I did go with a little taller tire, maybe that also had something to do with it?
